Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust Expands with Networking Upgrade
Background
Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust is a fantastic initiative that focuses on supporting 13-30 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds. Their aim is to help inspire people to succeed in their career of choice, without their background being a limited factor to what they can achieve.
The trust owns The Stephen Lawrence Centre based in the South of London. The building was built in 2008, with the interior being redesigned in 2017 by world-famous architects Gensler, introducing the co-working hub, Your Space.
The Challenge
As a non-profit organisation, Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust do not have a dedicated IT team to set up a wireless network or suggest Wi-Fi solutions when needed. They relied on one part-time IT volunteer to handle troubleshooting and resetting routers.
Before Vibrant and Zyxel stepped in, the building was fitted with a single router and a Wi-Fi extender to boost the signal to boost the signal to further parts of the building. This was unsuccessful – this was a problem because their lack of a good wireless network stunted their growth. The trust wanted to include separate businesses on their Wi-Fi network. The need for a wireless network solution for their building became apparent.
The Solution
The trust approached Vibrant Networks for advice – we recommended the Zyxel Nebula system along with cloud managed access points and switches to support it.
The centre redevelopment was a pro-bono project, meaning Zyel donated the necessary equipment to help the trust. This enabled them to gain the benefits of a wireless network without having to use the funding that could otherwise go back into the trust. The cloud managed Wi-Fi solution was the best option for the trust.

• A quick, stable wireless network
• Expanding the number of users on the network (up to70/week including tenants)
• No downtime or loss of connection

“Operationally, co-working is now fundamental to what we do here. Thanks to that extra revenue, the trust broke even on our building costs this year for the first time, meaning we’re able to put more Wi-Fi network, it was faced with a growing concern: the need for faster, wider and more secure network coverage. “Previously, we only had Wi-Fi for staff, which constantly broke down and only had signal in certain areas of the building. So, we knew that to transform our new centre into a co-working space, we needed a faster, more stable network. Since installing the Zyxel Nebula system our Wi-Fi is stronger and faster, and we have been able to take on tenants who can use our centre as their office. The operation of Your Space required fast Wi-Fi network throughout the whole building to support multiple users and enterprises. money back into the work we do with disadvantaged young people – and we haven’t had to pick up the phone to IT support once,”
